Susan, our other MOPS Mentor, mentioned how her family would crave pumpkins, put candles in them and sit on the front porch at Halloween. Then they would sing every song they knew about lights - This Little Light of Mine, etc... and talk about the true light of the world. I thought this was a great idea.

I grew up in a church that totally de-emphasized holidays, to the point of not even mentioning them or including them in worship. This was really hard for my mom who loved holiday celebrations, so she worked so hard to give our family Christ-centered traditions that we could return to year after year. One of my most treasured memories, and a tradition that I intend to incorporate into my family, is the celebration of Advent. Through quiet attentiveness to scripture and meditation on God becoming man, we can truly focus on what Christmas is all about! We will use an advent calendar, a wreath and candles, and special Bible readings throughout the season. And I can't wait!
