It has been a busy week at the International Christian Retailing Show in Orlando. It felt good to see many old friends and to meet new business contacts. I must admit that by the final day, I gave up on the professional shoes and went for the comfort of my Birkenstock (they still matched my outfit though
).
Spending a week in a completely Christian work environment is always encouraging — people are friendly, engaging and speak openly about serving the Lord. Sometimes, I have to smile to myself at all the marketing for God that is going on. God does not need any of us to market products for His Kingdom - but He does allow us to use the gifts that He has given to us to bring Him glory. I remember when I did my first (and only) book signing at ICRS - it was scary (would anyone stand in line for my book?) and humbling when the line formed and we ran out of books. My heart when out to the authors who didn’t have a line, but it also went out the the authors who had incredible lines — it is easy to believe your own press when you see lines of people waiting to meet you. It is simply amazing that God chooses to use people’s ability to honor Himself.
There were so many great books released as well as beautiful products such as art work (there are great inspired art pieces), paper products and jewelry. So much creativity to encourage believers in our Christian walk. We, as believers, are blessed beyond measure with all that is available to us. But as I walked through the aisles of books and products, my heart’s prayer was that all of these books and things would not take the place of God’s word in our lives (especially my life). Often, when so much is available, it is easy to focus on the stuff and not the true, basic word of God.
I am ready to head home tomorrow after spending a nice day with my parents. Yes, I have a few books to bring for a few daughters (and friends) who might be interested as well!
